The Client.

A French start-up that has developed a B2B Management System with the objective of modernizing and simplifying the administrative process for construction companies. The current process is outdated, requiring manual printing, signing, and scanning of numerous documents, which leads to significant time wastage for employees.

For instance, a €15 billion construction project often involves managing over 1500 administrative documents and exchanging 11000+ emails.

The solution is straightforward: centralize and digitize all documents and processes within a single system.

The Process.

I was expected to support the design team by promoting UX research, which involved conducting usability testing, gathering user feedback, and providing insights to the team for necessary improvements.

In my first week, I emphasized the importance of testing the product before launch and shared my methodology to achieve this goal with the team.

The first step was to gain a deep understanding of the construction industry:

  • Who are the stakeholders?

  • How do they collaborate?

  • What are their needs and pain points?

The Personas.

Considering the long-term business plan of acquiring all construction industry stakeholders as customers, we focused on key user profiles who would be early adopters of the product.

To quickly gain insights into our users' needs and desires, I created personas. This technique proved helpful not only for understanding our users but also for creating personas for other team members, such as the sales team, developers, and CEOs.

The Journey Map.

Given the diverse range of documents and processes in the construction field, my task was to comprehensively understand each process and its correlation with the defined personas. I documented all steps and interactions associated with each document. Simultaneously, I mapped out the ideal user journey using our product. This comparison allowed us to identify areas where our solution could enhance the users' work experience.

The User Testing.

To conduct usability testing, I recruited representative users based on our personas and leveraged Zoom for remote testing. Each usability test included a different team member as an observer. This approach helped the team grasp the importance of prototype testing and provided them with an opportunity to connect directly with users.

Executives recognized the value of design thinking in saving time and resources. After interviews, I synthesized the research findings and shared suggestions, positive and negative points with the team.

The Key Learnings.

  • Agile methods bring significant value to product development. Weekly meetings and retrospectives helped align everyone and facilitated quick decision-making and finding solutions through shared test reports.

  • Meetings involving both remote and in-office participants can be challenging for effective communication.

  • UX design is still not widely understood, even among technology professionals. Thus, one of our missions is to educate and fully explain the significance of UX research and design.

  • By prioritizing UX research and incorporating user feedback, we strive to deliver a truly optimized and user-friendly product that addresses the specific needs of the construction industry.
